10 Years Ago On Feb. 5 a short-term missionary team composed of 12 persons (Irene Hoagland, Tammy Taylor, Patty Ammerman, Sue Glover, Cathy Bentley, Penny and Bryan Robison, Mark Snyder, Gloria Rigdon, Mick and Stephanie Stanley, Pastor Dan Berry) departed Warsaw Wesleyan Church parking lot for Indianapolis International Airport bound for Haiti. After a layover in Miami, the team arrived in Port-Au-Prince. They were transported by truck to the OMS Missionary compound in the city. A wooden boat took them to the island of La Gonave. For the next week, the team participated in the maintenance of the hospital and were able to supply printed material to the church provided by World Missionary Press, New Paris. The team flew from there back to Port-Au-Prince Feb. 13, then on to Miami International Airport and home. 25 Years Ago The Grand Winners in the DAR American history essay were Megan Kinsey, a sixth-grade student at Lincoln Elementary, and Washington fifth-grader Angie Lutes. Other winners were Chandra Hopkins, Atwood; Dustin McClone, Claypool; Calvin Clutter, Jefferson; Mendy Sisk, Leesburg; Lindsay Kennedy, Madison; and Leslie Estep, Washington. Phyllis Thomas is regent of the Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter; Nancy Shoemaker is contest chairman. Claypool Elementary School presented the musical play, “Davey Crockett.” Jeremy Miller had the leading role. Others in the cast were Dustin McClone, Karri Bloom, Tim Hurd, Gwen Gunter, Sarah Miller and Brent Ring. Bob Dillon directed. Redeemer Lutheran School, 1720 E. Center St., Warsaw, is celebrating National Lutheran Schools Week March 5-11. The school was founded in 1983. 50 Years Ago Max Mollenhour has been with the Free Methodist Publishing House for 23 years, starting in the composing department. In 1959 he was appointed assistant to the plant superintendent. His position as production manager was effective Jan. 15. His wife, Mary, works in the shipping department. John C. Benson has been appointed director of art. Barbara Heckman, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Heckman, Route 1, Claypool, is the Times-Union February Calendar Girl. County and area basketball fans will recognize her as one of the Claypool High School cheerleaders. A senior, this is her third year leading yells for the Knights. 75 Years Ago Nine pupils of the Leesburg High School commercial class, taught by Bruce Rohn, visited the Western Union office Wednesday for an educational lecture on the operations of telegraphy. Molly Allen explained the fundamentals of the Western Union system to the class. Ray Weaver, 19, son of Mrs. Walter Bratt, Chapman Lake, snared a red fox on his trap line on the Fred Gilliam farm to remove a constant menace to farmers’ chicken flocks in that vicinity. Since foxes are one of the hardest animals to trap, his success makes him a number one trapper.
