Excerpts from Cousin Clem by Art Chaney: Jonathan Jennings, the first governor of Indiana, came down the Ohio River on a flat boat in his 22nd or 23rd year, landing at Vincennes where he became a lawyer. He later moved to Clark County and the town of Charlestown. Some say his home state was New Jersey; others say Pennsylvania. Jennings was elected to Congress in 1811, 1812 and 1813. He and his wife, Ann Hay, rode to Washington, taking 17 days. Jonathan was chosen a delegate to the state convention assembly to form a constitution. After defeating Thomas Posey, the Jennings moved to Corydon, where a governor’s mansion had been erected. He served from 1816 until 1822. He headed the committee to find a site near the middle of the state, Fall Creek Settlement in Indianapolis, which became the capital in 1924. He passed away at the age of 50 on July 21, 1834, in Charlestown.

School superintendent, Carl Burt, is Warsaw’s Man of the Year. Many years ago at the University of Chicago, on his first day of class, he wrote “ciricilim.” The name of the course? Curriculum.
Warsaw High School choral groups presented a concert last Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church. It was a thrilling experience. The mixed choir, as well as the girls’ ensemble, the Belles, presented choral music with a professional air. Their excellent training under the direction of Margaret Ann Voirol is reflected in artistic phrasing and perfect blending of voices. The next concert will be Feb. 9 at the Free Methodist Church, Winona Lake.
