    NORTH MANCHESTER - While many students were taking trips to exotic places to study and have fun, Julie Brown was in an exotic place studying and saving lives.

Brown, a junior biology/chemistry major at Manchester College, traveled to Mulukuku, Nicaragua, in January to take part in a medical practicum with nine other students.

March 19 1982

    A Milford Elementary School sixth-grader correctly spelled "rainspout" to become Kosciusko County's elementary spelling champion.

Lisa Kaiser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kaiser, Milford, spelled the word correctly in the 33rd round, topping 19 other youngsters, including runner-up Heather Sanders, a Lincoln Elementary sixth-grader and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Sanders, Warsaw.

50 Years Ago

March 19 1957

    Spring-like temperatures rose above the 50 mark shortly before noon today (Feb. 12), and four Winona Lake youngsters were spotted outside enjoying the bright sunshine. They are Bonnie Polston, 5, and her 2-year-old brother, Randy, children of Mr. and Mrs. Porter Polston; and Tom Dell, 5, and his brother, Johnny, 6, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Dell. All are residents of Winona Lake.


75 Years Ago

March 19 1932

    W.H. Bowen, 92, of North Park Avenue and Arthur Street, quietly celebrated his birthday recalling from his own memory some of the most stirring events of the nation. He is one of the very few surviving members of the 12th Indiana Infantry, commanded by the late General Reuben Williams. He enlisted from Warsaw with the infantry unit organized here on President Lincoln's second call for volunteers. He served throughout the struggle in the same regiment.
