10 Years Ago Austin Lehman, Josh Atkins and Lance Hostetler are Grace College students on spring break this week. They found out that Ritter’s Frozen Custard, Warsaw, was giving away a free year’s supply of ice cream to the first customer this morning, so they decided to bring their tent and camp out overnight. Warsaw Tiger seniors Michelle DeGeeter, Jaclyn Leininger and Holly Durcholz whooped it up Saturday after receiving the semistate champion award. 25 Years Ago Phyllis Engle was presented a plaque as “Associate of the Store” for February at the Warsaw Big Wheel by Archie Armino, manager. Phil Zimmerman, Warsaw, marks 20 years with United Telephone of Indiana in March. A 1962 graduate of Warsaw High School, he started with United on March 31,1969, as a cost studies analyst. On April 1, 1976, Zimmerman began his present job, general manager-access revenues. Brett Hackworth, son of Gordon and Louise Hackworth, Mentone, has been promoted to vice president of operations at King Louie International in Grandview, Mo. He joined the company in February 1988 as director of manufacturing. Hackworth is a 1976 graduate of Tippecanoe Valley High School. 50 Years Ago Warsaw’s airport (Earl Parker Field) is fast becoming one of the community’s leading assets. About 1,000 pilots from over the United States landed at the airport last year. Manager is E.M. Sheetz who has a commercial license and has flown thousands of hours in the past 22 years. Sheetz gives flying; James Johnson of the Johnson Lumber Co. took his first solo flight recently. Richard Roderick will play a cornet solo, “Willow Echoes,” at the band concert Jan. 29. in the new high school auditorium on East Smith Street. “Holiday for Trombones,” featuring Robin White, Harold Edwards, Steve Moore, Philip Crooke, Ronald Richard and Orville Blair, is among the music. Bazil O’Reilley is director. 75 Years Ago Warsawans who celebrated their birthday anniversaries on Saturday, Jan. 14, are Dan Netter, Russell Phillips, Frances Headley, Ruth Ladd, Carla Butler, Helen Sanders, Frances Hull and Zednia Fifer. Trailing by six points with six minutes left to play, Warsaw High School’s basketeers staged a brilliant rally to defeat Auburn Saturday night 26 to 24. Auburn was in front at the half 12 to 9. Warsaw was able to pull up within two points of the red-shirted five at the end of the third period, 17 to 15. Robert Buell and Charles Hay staged a two-man offensive attack with Garber, Anderson and Howard feeding them the ball to pull almost certain defeat out of the fire and turn it into victory. Hay led the Tigers’ offensive with 11 points.
