10 Years Ago Local Marine Corps Capt. Dion Anglin, a 1989 graduate of Tippecanoe Valley High School, returned to Camp Lejeune, N.C. March 6 after serving in Iraq. His parents, Dan and Marilyn Anglin, sisters, Anje Heckaman and Aimee Anglin, and niece, Amber Harmon, were on hand to welcome him home. Dion says that Care packages, such as the one from Lincoln Elementary School, were appreciated. Fawn Heisler, Etna Green, celebrated her 90th birthday Feb. 17 at the home of her sister, Evelyn Hall, Bourbon. The Salvation Army Auxiliary will serve their annual Soup and Pie Luncheon at the Center Lake Pavilion. Mazie Alexander will serve as bake sale chairman; Alice Schooley, general chairman, and Velena Beigh, table detail. 25 Years Ago Wawasee Community Schools superintendent Dr. Roger Thornton introduced students to the new middle school on Ind. 13, “the finest in the state of Indiana.” Although construction of the pool and gymnasium will not be complete on opening day Aug. 20, the rest of the building will fully accommodate all 850 students. A number of high-tech features will fulfill principal Larry DeWeese’s promise of “working hard but having fun along the way.” Ruth Johnson, whose native language is Portuguese, began studying English with tutor Karen Thomas in 1986 after moving to the United States from Brazil with her husband, Jim. She recently received her American citizenship. Thirteen Wawasee students dribbled basketballs from Wawasee to Triton in order to fire up the Warriors for their clash with Tippecanoe Valley in the Triton Sectional. It worked, 66-65. 50 Years Ago The Times-Union March Calendar Girls display all-out friendship in welcoming an anticipated 3,409 persons into the Warsaw High School gym March 1 for the sectional semi-final basketball tournament battles beginning at 7 p.m. The cheerleaders representing the schools that will pair off tonight are Beth Frantz, Claypool; Karen Ringgenberg, Pierceton; Candy Thomas, Warsaw; and Kathy Arnston, Columbia City. Pierceton and defending champion Columbia City play the first game; Warsaw and county champion Claypool oppose each other in the nightcap. Triton High School (students from Etna Green, Bourbon and Tippecanoe) captured the Plymouth sectional over Bremen; Silver Lake upset Wabash at North Manchester. 75 Years Ago Appearing in an issue of “Outdoor Indiana” is a photo taken from an old picture shot in 1891. Sent in by W.E. Osborn of Newcastle, it explains: “The photo I am sending of a spoonbill catfish or spadefish was caught by my father, Simon Osborn, and two brothers, Edward and Anthony, in Winona Lake at Warsaw. The fish weighed 156 pounds and was captured in a buffalo net. Almost a bushel basket of eggs were inside. A regular length of stove wood was used to prop its mouth open.” Winona Lake’s Bill Hunter, former town officer, resigned his present position as agent for Railway Express there March 1. He will be succeeded by Walter Haunz, who has been temporarily in charge since Jan. 1. Bill has accepted a position in Warsaw as an automobile salesman.
