10 Years Ago Bryce Durgin represented Kosciusko County recently in the 49th annual Journal Gazette Spelling Bee in Fort Wayne. He placed fifth in the area finals among the 17 county representatives from northeastern Indiana and Northwestern Ohio, spelling words that included “gordian,” “sonorous” and “incoherently” before misspelling “crith” in the 14th round. Durgin is an eighth-grader at Edgewood Middle School in Warsaw and the son of Susan and Robert Durgin of Winona Lake. 25 Years Ago Warsaw Community High School senior Ty Woodruff has earned All-Academic State honors, according to the March issue of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association’s newsletter. Woodruff, who was leading scorer for the Tigers this past season, was one of 15 players selected for the first team honor. A total of 144 individuals were nominated for the award. 50 Years Ago Mrs. Larry Carey and children, Lara Lee, Cathy, Judy and Tim of Warsaw will be in Chicago visiting the Chicago Natural History Museum, Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium. Kenny Brower will accompany them. Janet Gunter, a junior at Ball State Teachers College, Muncie, is spending several days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence W. Gunter of Warsaw. 75 Years Ago Nancy Nerby, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Nerby, and Generva Sims, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Sims of Winona Lake, were winners of silver medals in a contest held recently at the Free Methodist Publishing House sponsored by the Winona Lake W.C.T.U. In spite of the inclement weather there was a good attendance at the meeting. The next contest sponsored by the Union will be a gold medal contest.
