10 Years Ago Isaiah Knouff, 26, is preparing to go to Belgium to train for competative bicycle riding. He is a 1996 graduate of Warsaw Community High School and of Indiana University in 2001. While at I.U., Knouff was in a fraternity that had a team competing in the Little 500. The team won in 1999 and Knouff joined next year. He will leave for Belgium March 8 and is scheduled to be there until the end of June. Devon Wood, an eight-year employee, was the first person to complete the apprenticeship program at Biomet and was presented with a certificate of completion in the tool and die maker trade by Arthur Harker of the U.S. Department of Labor. John Deming is director of manufacturing and engineering at Biomet; Larry Stover, tool room supervisor; Garry England, vice president of manufacturing. For the sixth time in 13 years, the Times-Union boys “Player of the Year” hails from Whitko High School as senior Chad Christman won this year’s honor. Christman has started for Bill Patrick’s Wildcats for three years and has helped Whitko to a 17-3 record this season. 50 Years Ago C.L. and Thelma Pittenger have opened their new modern Club Oasis Restaurant at 617 South Buffalo St., Warsaw. The Pittengers have operated the Club Oasis on East Winona Avenue for the past eight years. Pamela Warner was named “Basketball Queen” at Triton High School over Janet Klinefelter, Diane Jackson, Karen Hall, Marcia Stouder, Cinda Stouder, Julia Moriarty and Cindy Listenfelt. Triton is a consolidation of Bourbon, Tippecanoe and Etna Green. Omer Shafer, Winona Lake, displays the four arrows he shot at the Hoss Hill range northeast of Leesburg. At a distance of 15 yards, he shot two arrows into the shafts of two already in the target. He placed 10 of 10 shots in the bulls-eye in less than 10 minutes. Shafer has been shooting for eight months. 75 Years Ago An examination was held at the Warsaw Post Office Saturday morning by Roy Bartol, clerk, for the selection of a postmaster in Pierceton to succeed Maurice Brosnahan. The candidates are Frank E. Humphreys, Theron J. Barker, John R. Smith, John D. Landis, Everett W. Smith, Alton Lower, Worley Smith, Lawrence W. Mort, Leo Dahm, Henry Smeader, Earl Gross and Mina Underwood. Former Warsaw undertaker Chester Zimmerman, long time Leesburgan, is back in Warsaw for a few days visiting old friends and his brother Elks. He now lives at Benton Harbor and is employed by a casket and embalming fluid manufacturing company. “The new embalming chemical and technique is superior to what the Egyptians used in preserving the mummies.”
