Akron’s oldest business, Pike Lumber Company Inc., is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Founded in 1904 by the late D.A. Pike and expanded by his daughter and son-in-law, the late Helen and Howard Utter, the company has 170 employees in its Akron and Carbon plants. The mills specialize in walnut, rift and quartersawn white oak, and stock 10 major species. President James Mulligan is guiding the company into its second 100 years. Pike owns more than 100 tracts of forestland and manages numerous others for landowners in Indiana, Ohio and southwestern Michigan.

The North Webster United Methodist Church announces a special Lenten program March 5 with Larry Givens portraying the life of the Apostle Peter, making the Scriptures come alive. The children’s choir, “Kathy’s Kids,” will be singing.
Third-grade students at Washington Elementary School were treated to a program on music by local musician John Miller, an accomplished guitarist, drummer and music instructor. He and his wife, Cathy, have written and performed Gospel music for the past 17 years. Their daughter Jamie is a Washington third-grader.
Grace Community Orchestra will present their spring concert March 5 at the Rodeheaver Auditorium in Winona Lake. Ethel Anderson directs the orchestra. Mary Parr is pianist.

Mr. and Mrs. Don Ault, Claypool, entertained at the Steer Inn members of the Claypool High School basketball team, cheerleaders, student managers, Coach and Mrs. Tom Miller, Principal and Mrs. Carl Sands and Trustee and Mrs. Raymond Reed.
Mrs. Gordon Nichols and Mrs. Ted Harman, employees of the First National Bank of Warsaw, inspect the new $50,000 drive-in bank facilities located at the corner of Center and Washington streets. The stainless steel and brick structure is scheduled to open Feb. 1, according to Robert Boley, assistant vice president. First National Bank was founded in 1937 by A. I. Nelson. The firm now employs 51 persons with Judge Donald Vanderveer serving as president.

Jan. 15 is educational Sunday at the Wesleyan Methodist Church, and all are asked to bring the amount of 37-1/2 cents per member for the support of Marion College. Sunday services at the First United Brethren Church will feature a solo by Gustav Tatter and a chalk talk by Charles Betz titled “Home Sweet Home.”
Silver Lake’s high school basketball team, Ramblers, makes the initial score of the game against Claypool. Everett Metzger made the shot from way out and Claypool’s Elmer Howard (No. 1), Bernard Neff (No. 2), Bob Reed (No. 0), and Silver Lake’s Dale Sittler (No. 5) charge in to take the rebound. Claypool won the game 30 to 20.
