Philip M. Hawks, 14, received a Certificate of Merit in recognition of his meritorious action taken while he attended the National Guard Youth Camp in July. At the camp, several youths became ill and Hawks discovered the illness was caused by carbon monoxide exposure. Hawks is an eighth-grader at Edgewood Middle School. His mother is Sandra Hawks.

One of the events to celebrate the 100 years of service at the Indiana United Way Centennial Conference in Indianapolis will be the recognition of the winners of the United Way Children’s Art Contest. Last week the overall state winners in grades kindergarten through eighth were selected in Indianapolis. The overall art contest winner in grade five throughout the state was Regina Egolf, Leesburg Grade School. She and her parents will attend the 1987 United Way Centennial Conference at the Adams Mark Hotel in Indianapolis.

Principal John Frederick announced recently that nine Mentone High School students lead the fourth grading period honor roll with all A’s. They are Doyle Eiler, Marsha Fisher, Eldona Antonides, Judy Decker, Lorna Tridle, Charles Hubartt, Jennie Bryan, Diana Sarber and Ronald Slone.

Jim Heaton Jr., Wilbur Strauss, Boyce, Margaret and Bruce Howard and Helen Fisher recently went to Lafayette where they attended a concert given by George Petrie and his White Hussars who will be featured on the chautauqua program at Winona Lake this summer.

Among those who will attend the Psi Iota Xi sorority bridge benefit Friday evening at Milford are Sue Hamman and R.L. Irwin of Warsaw, and Virginia and Henry Irwin of Bourbon.
