10 Years Ago Warsaw Community High School students traveled to the DECA State competition in Indianapolis Feb. 27 to March 1. Joe Ahlersmeyer earned a competency medallion in full-service restaurant management; Kate Miller, Alyssa Hatfield and Jill Kreinbrink earned a sixth-place plaque in marketing team presentation. Also competing was Julie Seiss and Andrew Larty, travel and tourism marketing; Danielle DeGaetano and Laura Heiman, sports and entertainment marketing. Linda Hoy is DECA advisor. Warsaw Boy Scout Troop 715 awarded Scouting’s highest honor, Eagle Scout, to Thomas Friddle, Matthew Holderman, Nathan Lafountain, Trenton McClintock, Preston Moudy, Jon Snyder, Trenton Porter, Patrick J. Vogt. Honor Guard Eagle Scouts are Kevin Hoover, Justin Hurt, Jason McClintock, Travis Porter, Kyle Schneider, William Winston, Dustin and Scott Snyder. 25 Years Ago March is National Nutrition Month, promoted locally by Joan Younce, Pat Brouwer and Jan Goshert. Chris Chambers, fifth-grader at Atwood Elementary, is the school champion in the Geography Bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Terry Winteregg is teacher. Kara Randall, third-grader at Atwood Elementary, raised $250 at the school’s “Jump for Heart” program; 75 students participated, and a total of $1,600 was raised for the American Heart Association. Physical education teacher Kathy Gruenewald coordinated the event. The Tippecanoe Valley Vikings scored an 82-66 victory over the Rochester Zebras in the opening game of the Triton Sectional, but it was anything but easy as Rick Brown and Dan Perez accounted for 22 points and 23 rebounds. Steve Dunnuck and Chris DuBois led the Vikings as they combined for 46 points. Dunnuck’s 15 rebounds were a game high. 50 Years Ago Claypool Volunteer Fire Department officers are Bob Warren, chief; Harold Drudge, assistant chief; Kenny Bush, captain; Layne Warren, secretary-treasurer. Max Davis retired as chief after 15 years of service. Geraldine Gansert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Gansert, and a North Webster High School senior, was named Betty Crocker’s Homemaker of Tomorrow. Frank Sanders, Warsaw High School business manager, gave Columbia City Principal Max Gandy his allotment of 857 tourney tickets. Warsaw Principal William Davis is tournament host. 75 Years Ago Warsaw High School’s freshman basketball team won its fourth consecutive game by defeating a like Plymouth aggregation 22 to 11. Dennis Risner, Bud Perkins, Norman Hankins, Charles Byland, Robert Schooley, Robert Taylor, Bud Garber and Terry Klondaris formed the winning quintet. Postmaster Roy E.K. Bowen proudly escorted a Times reporter through the newly decorated post office Wednesday. Walls, files, pigeon holes, everything shining spic and span. Letter canceling machine proved fascinating; employees can run 500 letters through quicker’n you can bat an eyelash. Mentone’s Victor Lane, author of “Along the Way” column, stood in the midst of fireman, water, smoke and flames, telephoning in the story of the burning Charles W. Eaton home, two miles northeast of Mentone.
