10 Years Ago Though fans gave him a standing ovation, the student section chanted his name and his statisticians heralded him No. 1 on a poster using a mathematic equation, it was business as usual for Al Rhodes Thursday night. The Warsaw junior varsity team started the evening with a win, its 95th in the last 97 games, and then Rhodes walked the sideline barking out calls much the way he has since 1980. Warsaw ended up topping the Northern Lakes Conference rival Plymouth 59-44 and got Rhodes his 400th career win.
25 Years Ago It's been a long time coming for Warsaw's girls basketball team. A six-year domination of the Warsaw sectional by Wawasee came to an end at the Tiger Den Saturday night, and the host school finally did the honors of cutting the nets after the championship game. Warsaw shut the door on WawaseeÕs bid for a seventh-straight title with a 56-39 win, taking a 16-3 record into regional competition in the process. Brenda Kachlik scored 20 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, while guard Stacy Grow had 12 points and 10 assists.
50 Years Ago A motor caravan headed by local "Y" leaders John Snell and Jack Moltz is being organized to journey to Niles, Mich., to inspect new YMCA facilities there, described as "palatial," headquarters here announced today. Moltz said the caravan will depart from Kosciusko Community YMCA campaign headquarters. He further added that everybody is invited to join the caravan. Persons interested joining, either with car loads of friends, or requiring transportation should call office personnel.
75 Years Ago Night Officer Judd Pittenger early Monday morning was called on to perform a peculiar duty... an SOS call from Goshen. Policemen are asked to do many awkward duties, but this one is different. A telephone call from Goshen told the officer that the city's former sheriff had left the city by automobile en route to Indianapolis without his luggage -- two suit cases. Would the Warsaw policemen kindly stop the absent-minded motorist and remind him that his grips still remained in Goshen? Pittenger did. The man, grumbling, turned his car about and sped toward Goshen.
