Students from Whitko High School competed at the Indiana State School Music Association solo and ensemble contest Jan. 29 at Wayne High School in Fort Wayne. Gold Division: Jenna Roman, Tabitha Parson, Courtney Blankenship, Janice Rogers, Briana Couch, Kelsey Kreger, Brianna Bumbaugh, Danielle Mowrey, Julie Wilkinson and Tisha Kyler. Silver Division: Andrea Socha, Adrienne Carrico and Britanni Smith. The Gospel Choir competes in state competition Feb. 26 in Indianapolis: Jenna Roman, Amanda Strang, Adam, Andrew and Amanda Nicodemus, Danielle Mowrey, Sam Schrader, Michelle Collier, Andrea Socha, Mindy Kessie, Marissa Mudrack, Korey Flinn and Wes Williams.

Wawasee’s Lady Warriors used a tenacious defense, a timely offense and a solid team effort to notch their first Warsaw Sectional win in three years over Triton’s Lady Trojans, 47-40, at the Tiger Den. With the win, Wawasee (4-15) earns the right to meet No. 1-rated Warsaw, which eliminated Tippecanoe Valley in the first game, for the sectional title. Sara Wilkinson came off the bench to score 12 points and spark the Warriors to a win.
The fourth-grade classes at Washington Elementary School celebrated Pioneer Day after learning about pioneers in their Indiana history classes. Students learned to square dance, make cornbread, funnel cakes and butter, and to create cornhusk dolls and tin punch pieces.

Mayor Joe Johnson signs a proclamation announcing the start of Kiwanis International Golden Anniversary Week, founded Jan. 21, 1915. Blaine Mikesell is 1965 president of the Warsaw Club formed April 4, 1921.
Workmen removed trees from the site of a new bridge to be constructed south of Etna Green on Inc. 19, taking the place of three narrow bridges on the highway.
Minnie Swope, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Swope, and Jasper Eakright, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Eakright, were united in marriage Jan. 24, 1915, at the home of the bride’s parents south of Roann. They will celebrate their golden anniversary with an open house at their home, North Manchester. They have two daughters, Mrs. Robert Dickey, North Manchester, and Mrs. Ronald Pence, Claypool.

Some readers around Akron and the south part of the county missed their morning Warsaw Times Friday because star mail route owner Walter Thorpe’s truck, which hauls the newspaper, was wrecked after crashing into a semi-trailer near Plymouth, injuring the driver, John Sowash of Peru.
Robert Zimmer, Times sport assistant, suffered two deep gashes on his head Friday night when he fell from press box at the armory during the county tourney striking an iron brace. He was taken to Dr. Max Garber where he received four stitches in his forehead and two in the back of his head. He then returned to the armory, covering the play-by-play description for readers.
