10 Years Ago Akron Elementary School collected 1,830 nonperishable food items during its Christmas Food Drive. The food drive is sponsored annually by Mrs. Burdge’s fourth-grade class as a community service project. Helping Hands distributed the food. Evan’s shooting skills earned him a signed shirt and a lifetime memory. 25 Years Ago Edward Likens, vice president and Pierceton Branch manager for First National Bank of Warsaw, was awarded the bank’s “Golden Dome Award” by chairman of the board George Lenke. Likens has been involved with banking in Kosciusko County for more than 20 years. John Mannan, United Telephone Company, received the “Customer Relations Award” for his assistance to an injured driver after a traffic accident when he was one of the first at the scene and administered first-aid. Mannan, his wife, Chris, and 2-year-old daughter, Catlin Marie, reside in Warsaw. 50 Years Ago The Syracuse-Wawasee Winter Carnival will be held Feb. 15 and 16 at Syracuse and Mount Wawasee Ski Lodge. Jack Wells is chairman of the second annual event; other members are John Kroh, Earl Money, Dale Butts, Charles Cleveland, Jerry Herbison, Robert Seward, John Cripe, William Cutter, Clem Lisor and Robert Rule. Plans are to have skydivers, parakites, dogsled races, hockey games, ice skating and skiing exhibitions, broom ball (push broom and a basketball) and sports car races. A dance Saturday evening will be held at the Hoosier Skateland. Judy Bryan, a Syracuse High School student, is excited as her favorite team, the Syracuse Yellow Jackets, advanced to the second round of the county high school basketball tourney by downing Silver Lake, 65 to 56. Pierceton defeated North Webster; Milford defeated Akron. 75 Years Ago By Mush Warner: Principals of the county’s 14 high schools will assemble Jan. 7 to make the drawing for the 22nd annual county tournament. Glen Whitehead, North Webster Principal, will act as tourney manager. Mentone’s Bulldogs, with an undefeated record to date, is the favorite. Claypool is accorded second best chance of taking the tourney because of the Knights’ high scoring machine. The Blue Blazers of Leesburg are third with the play of Phillip Flynn, Harold Wallace, and Jack Harley. Leesburg has a stonewall defense. Warsaw is fourth choice. The Tigers’ hopes were given a boost when Bob Bayne and Darrell Lancaster returned to the squad. Coach Bill Bryan’s Pierceton Cubs are defending titleholders and promise to be vastly improved.
