10 Years Ago The Times-Union is celebrating 150 years of publication in 2004 and Gary Nieter has created a special nameplate. On Jan. 10, 1856, the first edition of the weekly Northern Indianian, founded by Gen. Reuben Williams and George Fairbrother, was published with a circulation of 250. It was printed in a frame building at 116 N. Buffalo St., which is now the home of Dig’s Diner. In the early 1860s publication was moved to the corner of White’s block on the southeast corner of Center and Buffalo, next to the new Phoenix block in 1866 where the presses were operated by steam, then to a building at the north end of the Empire block before ending up at the corner of Market and Indiana. 25 Years Ago The birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. is being recognized at the Warsaw Christian School. First-graders Cynita Hoskins and Eboni Shipp participated in a chapel program by singing “I Am A Promise” to the students. Quadruplets were born early this morning, Jan. 16, to Tom and Sue Swick,, Winona Lake, at the University Medical Center, Indianapolis. A gas leak during the weekend at Ameri-Kan Inc. sickened 30 people when they arrived for work Monday. Officials said the leak came from a welding machine and filled the building with fumes. 50 Years Ago A nine-inch total rainfall in July kept 1963 from being the worst drought year of recent record, according to The Times-Union/WRSW weather station located on the west shore of Winona Lake. The transmitter site measures and records rainfall every 24 hours. City Fire Chief Norman Banghart reported that Warsaw volunteer firemen answered 130 alarms in 1963 with total damage estimated at $172,655.24. Much of the damage resulted in the city from three major fires: Central Shoe Co., 106 E. Center St.; Holiday Bowling Lanes, 1702 E. Market St.; Kimm Paint Co. and an apartment overhead, 217 E. Center St. In each case, firemen were able to keep the fire from spreading. 75 Years Ago Dorothea Scott is in line for the beauty prize this year at Free Methodist College in Greenville, Ill. Hettie Lyons of Leesburg is celebrating her 72nd birthday anniversary Jan. 5. Russell Hollar and Gordon Teeple came into the Times building to show a photograph of 15 big raccoons they caught this season in Kosciusko County aided by their two fine hounds. The two men caught their 16th last night near Milford.
