10 Years Ago The North Manchester Rotary Club handed the deed for a new gazebo to town council president Don Rinearson during a dedication ceremony celebrating the 100th anniversary of Rotary Club International. The North Manchester club got its start in 1939 and now has 31 members. The gazebo is next to the library and houses two permanent benches donated by Viv Simmons and Howard and Mary Catherine Urich. Rotary is the country’s first service club, established in Chicago April 23, 1905 by Paul Harris. The local club first met in Warsaw April 17, 1919 in the Hotel Hays, and was chartered as Club 3393, District 6540 June 1. Current officers are Cindy Hampton, president-elect; David Jones, past president; Katy Hampton, secretary. 25 Years Ago For the second consecutive year, Meenakshi “Meena” Datta, daughter of Jatinder and Gita Datta, has been named champion in her grade category at Lincoln Elementary School. Meenakshi, sixth grade, became champion of the first round of the 1990 Kosciusko County Spelling Bee by spelling “emeritus” correctly in the 36th round of the fifth- and sixth-grade. Neal Beer, fifth-grader at Milford, was runner-up when he misspelled “ebullience” in the 34th round. Don Smythe was honored with a plaque for 38 years of service to the Mentone Fire Department upon his retirement in January. Joe Good received a plaque for serving as chief the past 14 years. He will continue to serve as treasurer for the department. 50 Years Ago Renovation plans at Holiday Bowling Lanes, Warsaw, include 12 Brunswick A-2 Automatic Pinsetters, according to an announcement by Roger Clemens, proprietor. Bowlers won’t have to wait for the return of their ball or the resetting of pins, bringing a smooth, uninterrupted pace. City street department workers Hargus Tackett and Melvin Himes installed four-way stop signs at the intersection of East Market and South Scott streets. Chief of Police Donald Snyder made this request, and the Board of Works gave their approval. Jerry Jackson, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Jackson, Bourbon, and a member of Boy Scout Troop 254, received the Eagle Scout badge in a ceremony at First United Church of Christ. He is an eighth-grade student at Triton and has 22 merit badges. 75 Years Ago Warsaw’s Spanish Civil War veterans entertained the women’s auxiliary with a fish fry in the Red Men hall. Following a short business session, the camp was inspected by District Inspector Major Leonard Wood of Fort Wayne, who declared the camp was in first-class condition. Dr. O.T. Martin, Warsaw, superintendent of the Methodist churches in the Warsaw district, spoke Feb. 3, at the anniversary rededication service of the Etna Green Methodist Church. Bishop Wade and the Rev. Edwin Jaycox, pastor, read rededication services, inaugurating the church into its 24th year. A brief history of the church was read by Seward Poor. Mentone Lion Dale Kelly has been appointed to work out details for the Easter egg hunt.
