10 Years Ago Thomas Cole, son of Mark and Sharon Cole, Winona Lake, was one of the 169 high school band members selected to participate in the 45th annual Indiana All-State High School Band Festival March 11 -13 at the Indiana University campus, Bloomington. Among nearly 900 who applied to audition, Cole had to learn to play three different pieces of music. Jenna Gross, daughter of Jerry and Jill Gross, Mentone, has been selected as one of the 33 young women (princesses) representing their hometowns in the 500 Festival events through May. One will be crowned queen during the Indianapolis 500. 25 Years Ago Warsaw police took a February dip in Center Lake hoping to recover stolen items after a fisherman discovered a computer disk drive and monitor in the water. Chief Craig Allebach and other divers searched the lake in the afternoon and into the evening, but had no luck recovering any more items. Police believe the items, including a VCR and television, were taken from Warsaw Community High School. The new Warsaw Community High School on Ind. 15S will open for 1,550 students April 9 following spring vacation. Moving from the old high school to the new will begin March 29, according to WCHS officials. Construction manager, Jerry Gibson, projects that construction of the school and vocational center at the former freshman high school building will be complete by the end of March; the gymnasium is scheduled for completion later this spring. 50 Years Ago Volunteers distributed peanuts for the March of Dimes Teen Age Program. They were Nancy Taylor, Martha Shoemaker, Beth Cluen, Diane Bertsch and Mary Pat VanOsdol, manager. Coach Roger Bridge presented jackets to eight seniors at Mentone High School for participation in athletics. Receiving them were Joe Hively, Everett “Butch” Warren, Fred Ryman, Dena Nellans, Connie Smythe, Ernest Murcia, Mike Whetstone and Jerry Shirey. Pierceton High School girls chosen to represent the school at Girls State are Sharon Regenos, Laura Stickler, both delegates, and Barbara Kerr, Kathy Burns, alternates. Elizabeth Walters, Warsaw, Barbara Johnson, Mentone, Kirk Prickett, Syracuse, and Ralph Hernandez, Atwood, enjoyed the Shrine Circus clowns. Approximately 1,200 third-graders and 125 adults made the trip to Fort Wayne. 75 Years Ago John W. Chapman, native Warsawan, now a resident of North Manchester, will deliver a lecture entitled “The Mystery of Life” at the new high school auditorium. There is no admission charge, but a silver offering will be taken with half the proceeds given over to the Elks’ school milk fun. Frank Meredith and his high school band furnish musical entertainment. The speaker’s grandfather, the late John B. Chapman, played a prominent part in laying out the town of Warsaw as a surveyor. His father, late Col. C.W. Chapman, commanded the 74th Indiana Regiment in the Civil War, identified with Warsaw’s early history. Bill Swihart, Roger Kelly, Bill Carter and Scoutmaster Lawrence Smith, Troop 30, entertained the Warsaw Kiwanis Club with exhibitions of knot-tying and first aid.
