Grace Brass will present a free concert at Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church to raise money for the Community Christian School, Port Charlotte, Fla., hit when Hurricane Charley whipped through the community Aug. 13. Zach Evans, Luke Kelley, Casey Richey, Nancy Bustos, Bethany Vaughn, Katie Daniels and director Dr. Tim Sanborn, professor of music at Grace College, will present the concert March 9.
Erika Jansen, a sixth-grader at Sacred Heart, placed second in the middle school division of the 2005 Young Composers Competition Feb. 13 in Indianapolis, with her composition “Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride.” Erika has studied piano for five years with Paula Popenfoose.

Warsaw Wesleyan Church is among the 100 largest Wesleyan churches in the nation, having jumped from 25th to 20th. Pastored by the Rev. W. Paul James, the church has grown from 180 to more than 500 per Sunday since March 1986. Leaders at the Wesleyan International headquarters in Indianapolis characterize the feat as “a colossal leap forward.”
The Egg Challenge, a project to design a container which would protect eggs from a 25-foot fall, was a popular event at this year’s Learning Fair at Pierceton Elementary School.
For the second year in a row, the Warsaw Tigers’ wrestling team has a state runner-up, sophomore Aaron Wilson, who took second place at 112 pounds and whose effort helped lead the Tigers to a 10th-place team finish.

Girl Scouts skated on Center Lake. Troop 45 Scouts were Loretta Castaldy, Allison Day, Mary Pat Dryer, Paula Kelty, Sheryl Knowles, Kandis North, Christine Mangan, Karen Miller, Joan and Nancy Steenhausen, Micky Watts, Lisa Weaver; Troop 6 Scouts were Karen Albertson, Sheryl Jordan, Juanita Jerrers, Jackie Knepper. Leaders were Kay Mitterling, Jeane DeGood and Yvette Miller.
Dave Barnett, Warsaw High School senior speech student, took top honors at the County American Legion oratorical contest at Milford High School and will compete in the district contest. Mike Valentine, Warsaw, took second place in the national contest in 1963. Other Warsaw students participating were Gary Haymond, Cheryl Chance, Dave Wright and LaMar Bryan.

Warsaw High School’s “Marching 40” band has expanded to 73 musicians. Two new baton twirlers, Betty Kelly, 10B Grade, daughter of the Floyd Kellys, South Buffalo Street, and Jeannine McKown, sixth grade, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred McKown, Columbia Street, will be shifted into positions next fall, filling vacancies left by Mary Jane McKown, senior, senior majorette. They bested a field of seven in a twirling contest at the high school. Diane Kain, sister of David Kain, band mascot and twirler, won second place in the contest and will be given a position in the newly organized “Marching 73” as soon as a vacancy occurs.
