Dental hygienist Stephani Lortie of Dental Health, South Union Street, explains part of the cleaning procedure to Ashley Doan as part of the American Dental Association’s “Give Kids a Smile/National Children’s Dental Access Day” Feb. 6. A dozen children had dental appointments Friday.
Donna Person, band instructor at Edgewood and Lakeview middle schools, was awarded the Indiana Music Educator’s Association Outstanding Middle School Music Educator of the Year Award for 2004. She has taught band in Indiana 31 years, teaching at Warsaw Community Schools since 1984.

Sean Lackey, a fifth-grader at Pierceton Elementary, won his school’s geography bee Jan. 13. He will go on to the National Geographic Society bee in Washington, D.C., where he will compete for a $25,000 scholarship.
The Madison School sixth-grade reading class of Douglas Hoffert created a “Would You Believe Museum” as a class project. Brandon Schmitt, Jennifer Dittmer and Kevin Dorrough look over the exhibits.
Denny Andrews is presented with the “Competent Toastmaster Award” from Bob Richmond, president. Edna Pringle received a certificate of appreciation.
Eight Kosciusko County residents completed work for degrees during the fall semester at Ball State University: Shannon Jenks, Leesburg; Michael Morrison, Pierceton; Thomas Tuttle, Syracuse; Sharon Beeson, Mark Klinger, Jay Mill ,  Kenny Harrell and Kris Kehoe, all of Warsaw.

State Representative George Fisher, Leesburg, is going to ask the park service to erect a monument in Warsaw’s cemetery at the grave of Thomas Hubler, the youngest soldier to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War.
The Calico Kitchen has reopened in its new location on West Market Street across from Sears. The proprietors, Mr. and Mrs. George Bullock, Sr., formerly of Pierceton, purchased the building from the Devon Smiths.

Icemen John Lucas and Ernest Clase are discouraged today over ice packing prospects. The 6-inch ice of a week ago has now nearly all disappeared and the spring-like temperature of 54 gives little hope of any ice packing for some weeks.
Bob Richards, Winona Lake, employed at Daltons, is marketing his chicken roost hinge invention to poultrymen. The hinge permits instant removal of roosts for cleaning, doesn’t wear out, and is easily fixed. He has the approval of poultry magazine investigators.
Jerry Dalton is looking for charms and trinkets to put in Brooks’ birthday cake for his party next Friday.
He will be 8 years old.
