Mentone Fire Chief Butch Warren presented Roger Montel, who has been with the department 39 years, with the 2004 Firefighter of the Year award and Dennis Alderfer with the 2004 Atta-Boy award.
Former Wawasee standout and current University of Tennessee player Shanna Zolman was congratulated by Coach Pat Summitt after scoring her 1,000th career point in Thursday's 74-44 rout of South Carolina. Play was stopped in the second half and her name was called over the loudspeaker. She is the 31st player in Tennessee history to reach 1,000 points. While playing for her father, Kem Zolman, at Wawasee, she scored 3,085 career points and was named 2002 Miss Basketball.

Warsaw Community High School marketing DECA students won first place in the District II contest in South Bend. Twenty-seven will compete in the state contest in Indianapolis Feb. 23-25 including Steve Wallen, Rachael Colt, Adrianne Heaton, Scott Rooney, Jason Trammel, Matt VanOsdol, Amanda Brookins, Angie Keirn, Paige Schwinnen, Bob Taylor, Doug Light, Dave Hall, April Swanson, Allison Cole, Kelly Matson, Reuben Reyna, Ted Westerhof, Dave Justice, Louis Stump, Christy Hartman, Tony Clark, Mike Campbell, Brian Klinger, Marty Dixon, Holly Arnett, Joe Folck, Christy Lemon, Jennifer Moryl, Dawn Klemczewski, Bill Long, Debbie Hernandez, Mindy Rhoades, Bethany Grubb, David Dady Jr., David Justice, Matt Arnett, Ryan Cook, Mark Klosowski, Emily Steller and Terry Wood.

Kosciusko County Shriners will gather at the Unique Bakery in Warsaw to prepare more than 1,200 lunches for third-graders making a trip to the Shrine Circus Feb. 5. President Brooks Pinnick named Lanny Mauzy the circus chairman, assisted by James Mitchell; Jim Bair and Terry Klondaris head the transportation committee; John Hall is the food chairman; the advance detail includes Walter Hyde, James Ladd, George Atkins and William Sadler.
Johnie King, 5, made a "clean sweep" of the snowy walks despite sub-zero temperatures in Warsaw. He was assisted by his kin, Debbie, Rita and Dickie, all children of Mr. and Mrs. Richard King.

North Buffalo Street's Bob Murtaugh, youthful motorcyclist, drove a small pick-up on Center Lake, pulling two shouting, gleeful boys on skiis. Ice is about 16 inches thick – plenty solid for that kind of romping.
