10 Years Ago Jenna Hollinger and Luke Lusk, members of the Warsaw Community High School Band directed by Mickey Ratliff and Matthew Gratton, were selected to participate in the Annual Indiana All-State High School Band Festival sponsored by the Indiana Bandmasters Association. Hollinger and Lusk earned this honor by participating in a highly competitive audition held early in January at nine centers across Indiana. Nearly 1,000 young musicians applied to audition. 25 Years Ago Lowell Zile and Duane Sells were recognized for 30 years of service to the Silver Lake Fire Department. John Teeter, fire chief, presented a gold badge to each man for the occasion. Zile was voted fireman of the year for 1987, and Sells held the same honor in 1986. 50 Years Ago The state music contest held Saturday in Indianapolis brought superior ratings to four vocal music students of Warsaw Community High School. Those who earned the highest possible ratings were Lois Gardner, LeEtta Ring, Elizabeth Geible and Ruth Hood, all soprano vocalists. Excellent ratings went to Kathleen Morphew, alto; David Martin, baritone; and Cherryl Chance, soprano. 75 Years Ago The Silver Lake High School cast won the one-act drama play contest held at Etna Green recently. The title of the Silver Lake play was “Death Takes a Bribe.” The winner was awarded a gold plated cup as a trophy. Other schools in the contest, and title of the plays, follow: Etna Green, “The High Heart”, Sidney, “Early Frost” and Mentone, “Thirst”.
