February 17 1999

    It took 10 rounds, an hour and some nail-biting tension for Christ Breault, a sixth-grader from Eisenhower Elementary, to win the first round of the county spelling bee.

Out of a field of 21 fifth- and sixth-grade students, Breault correctly spelled "evocative" to take the title Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Warsaw.

February 17 1984

    Wawasee's Anita Swope cut down the spoils of victory (basketball net) after she helped her team to a 49-43 regional triumph over Columbia City Saturday. It puts the Warriors in the Sweet Sixteen for the first time ever, where they will meet Fort Wayne Snider in the Fort Wayne semi-state next Saturday.

February 17 1959

    Today (Feb. 5) was a red-letter day at the Kosciusko County jail. No prisoners for the first time in several months.

Mrs. Sam (Isabel) Holbrook, jail matron, said she served lunch for the last prisoner at noon yesterday. It was not necessary to prepare an evening meal or breakfast this morning, except for husband Sam (the sheriff) and son Bob.

    Mrs. Gilday, of Tippecanoe Lake, exhibited a large egg laid by a White Rock pullet, at this office. The egg measured 8-1/2 inches in circumference and 7-1/2 the opposite way.
