10 Years Ago Warsaw Community High School senior Chris Elvidge, whose favorite sport is wrestling, will do battle at the Merrillville Semistate Feb. 12 with his brother, freshman Matt,and Wawasee’s Chase Davis. All three are just two wins away from advancing to next week’s finals at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. 25 Years Ago Members of Wawasee’s FFA soil judging team earned honors as the best in the district at the Soil and Water Conservation District meeting Tuesday: Russell Anderson, Derik Green, Shawn Krull and David Rosenberry. Advisor is Randy Warren. Doug and Dick Shock were presented the Goodyear Award by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. The Shocks were recipients of the Farmer of the Year award last year. Eric McGinnis, 23, son of Art and Nancy McGinnis, Winona Lake, is preparing to leave Sunday to embark on a six-month venture in Jinen, China. A 1988 graduate of Grace College, he entered Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky., last fall. He will teach English to Chinese students at Shandong Polytechnic University. 50 Years Ago Max Kintzel retired Jan. 21 after 18 years of service as janitor of the Etna Green school. He and his wife have 25,000 chickens, which produce 55 cases of eggs a day. He had been called to help fix the furnace, and when he arrived at the school was led to the gymnasium where the student body had gathered to honor him. Buffalo St., throws open its doors to public inspection in formal attire to inaugurate its big three-day grand opening event by showing one of the widest selections of new 1940 furniture designs ever displayed in this community, it was announced by Manager Chester E. Bolinger. Many free gifts will be given away to visitors, including an oil painting by Mrs. Bolinger.
