    Ashley Wireman of Washington Elementary correctly spelled "trudged" after it was missed by Brent Danner of North Webster Elementary. To clinch her victory, Wireman then spelled "irrelevant," winning the first round of the 1998 Kosciusko County Spelling Bee.

    The Board of Advisors for the Outstanding Young Women of America awards program announced four area women are among those honored. The program honors women ages 21-36 who have distinguished themselves in their homes, professions or communities through dedication, leadership and service.

Honored were Jane Ann Glover, Dallas, Texas, and Kathleen Elizabeth Welsh, APO, N.Y., both formerly of Kosciusko County; Melva Ann Wright, South Whitley; and Renee Michelle Lindzy, Warsaw.

February 15 1958

    Airman Jay E. Hawk is expected to arrive home Wednesday evening from Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, Texas, for a 15-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward HAwk, 1004 E. Market St. This is Jay's first visit home since last August when he enlisted for four years.

February 15 1933

    ROCHESTER - Alfred Murphy, 79 years old, a veteran tobacco chewer, awakened Thursday to find the thermometer at 8 degrees below zero, his automobile not running, and his supply of eating tobacco gone. He had been chewing every day since he was 18 years old and he didn't intend to quit now just on account of cold weather. So he walked five miles into Rochester in the face of a biting west wind and bought himself enough to last a week, then walked home with it.
