Skip Smeltzer, a Warsaw Breakfast Optimist and assistant principal/athletic director at Edgewood Middle School, and Jim Hayes, Warsaw Breakfast Optimist Club, are pictured with the “Student of the Week,” Rachel Voorhorst, daughter of Paul and Karalyn Voorhorst. Each year the Warsaw Breakfast Optimist Club sponsors the award for Warsaw middle and high school students who excel in classroom leadership.
Winners of the DARE essay contest at Akron Elementary are Austin Nelson, Abby Higgins, Jennifer Pyle and Chris Baga, school winner. Each received a medalion, and 71 fifth-grade students were honored.

Dr. John J. Davis, president of Grace College and Grace Theological Seminary, will be giving a program titled “Dead Men Tell Tales” at the meeting of the Kosciusko Soil and Water Conservation District Feb. 7 at the Shrine Building. The program will focus on tomb excavations Davis has directed in Jordan, and will demonstrate what has been learned about the ancient Romans and other peoples from the study of tombs, bones and artifacts. He has been a professor of archeology and Old Testament at the seminary for 23 years and has lectured throughout the United States as well as Canada, Western Europe, Central America and the Far East. Davis has written 11 books, more than 400 articles, and the column “Outdoor Scene” for The Times-Union. He was chosen “Indiana Outdoor Writer of the Year” by the Indiana Department of Resources in 1986.

Superintendent Delbert Hatton of the Whitko School Corp. announced that Gerald Hartman painted Larwill School during the Christmas vacation. Floor tiles were laid in three rooms. Plans are for the flag pole in front of the school to be repaired by Reiff Construction Co., Larwill, as soon as the weather is suitable.
Milford High School’s cheerleaders demonstrate one of their routines during halftime: JoEllen McClintic, Sharon Moneyheffer, Susanne Dewart and Ginger Hollar. The Milford High School Trojans won over the Syracuse Yellow Jackets, 87-74, to move into Saturday’s semi-finals with Pierceton, Claypool and Mentone.

Kosciusko County farmers this winter will have the opportunity to learn how to “put the curl” in a pig’s tail and “fatten” the bank account, remarked County Agent Joe Clark in announcing a countywide swine school Jan. 25 in Warsaw. Definite arrangements have been made for the appearance of John Schwab, Purdue Extension hog specialist, and Paul Mitchell, Extension livestock marketing specialist.
Warsaw clothier Ben Phillipson has tendered his resignation to the Warsaw City Council as member and president of the three-man park board. Only Paul Bilby remains now; Earl Parker’s term has expired.
