10 Years Ago New officers of the Kosciusko County Shrine Club were installed by Potentate Donald Heck, Fort Wayne Mizpah Shrine Club: Norm Strayer, president; Bob Burner, vice president; Bill Newland, secretary; Jimmy Fleming, treasurer. Warsaw Community High School students have been molding and bagging chocolate stars for the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce Banquet. Judy Egolf has taught family and consumer science classes for 22 years. Students are Audrey Wallen, Melissa Buhrt, Anita Emmons, Maribel Olivo, Teresa Xique and Shannon Wentz helped out. 25 Years Ago “The Writing Connection” is a basic writing skills development program that has involved second-graders from Leesburg School with sophomore English students at Warsaw Community High School. Ashley Cavert and Matthew Turner share stories they have written. Kosciusko County officials are considering the purchase of the 68-acre fairgrounds, hoping to generate more funds. Councilman George Klinger said, “I think it ought to be turned over to the county. Every taxpayer or resident of the county would be part of it. It could be used for a park 51 weeks of the year and a fair for one week.” 50 Years Ago The new Shrine building at the fairgrounds was dedicated Jan. 8. Nearly 300 persons attended. Joseph C. Cerny, outgoing president, commended those who played a major part: Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Henderson, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Butler, Mr. and Mrs. John Helfrich, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Hartman and Shriners Walter Hyde, Jay Schue and Everett Hanft. Robert M. Jackson was chairman. Shrine Chaplain William Orr gave the invocation. Hobart Creighton was in charge of a memorial service for deceased Shriners. 75 Years Ago Jacob Koontz, A.D. Phillips, and H.L. Koontz proudly show friends their newly decorated suite of offices in the Lake City Bank building rear second floor. H.L. Koontz is the father of Prosecuting Attorney Koontz and will operate a real estate office in the new suite. Attorney John Call is opening his law offices in the front second floor rooms. Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Parker, San Diego, Calif., formerly residents of a farm at Shoe Lake near Oswego, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Jan. 29. They have one daughter and son-in-law, Rose and Will Alexander, San Diego, and one son and his family who live in Madison, Wis.
