Lakeview Middle School hosted a schoolwide geography contest in which 82 seventh and eighth grades participated in the National Geography Bee in connection with National Geographic Society. Each contestant went through six rounds of preliminary questions to reach a top 10. Each eighth-grader was questioned until they missed two questions; they then were eliminated. The winners from both grade levels participated in a championship round against one another. Baxter Burnworth was the eighth-grade winner and Andrew Hood was the seventh-grade winner.

Warsaw Community High School basketball player Brian Rhoades paid tribute to classmate Rick Fox with a “44” on the back of his warmup. Fox, who was ruled ineligible this season by the IHSAA, wore that number the past two years. A published photo showed Rhoades going against Sean O’Conner prior to Friday’s game. The Tigers certainly could have used Fox in their 57-46 loss to sixth-ranked Gary Wallace.

The North Manchester town water plant pumped a total of 184,660,000 gallons of water for the community in 1961. James Taylor, water superintendent, reported this was a record for the plant.
The Etna Green Methodist Youth fellowship group recently visited Chicago. Museum of Science and Industry and Field Museum were visited. The group also took a tour through Skid Row, Maxwell Street, China Town and the Loop.

Walter McCleary, 49, and his sister, Florence, 55, escaped death by chance when their drink-crazed farmhand, Steve Matlak, 60, pointed a loaded shotgun at them and failed to kill them only because he didn’t know how to operate it. He snapped the trigger several times then offered the gun to Walter, asking Walter to shoot him (Matlak). The madman then set fire to their home, barn and three other buildings.
