10 Years Ago Two new area codes will take effect in Indiana beginning Jan. 15. Most of Kosciusko County will change to the 574 area code. Calls to Sidney and Silver Lake will require the 260 area code. Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor public information officer Anthony Swinger said the new area codes do not affect 911 calls, long distance telephone rates, local rates or local (free) calling area boundaries.
25 Years Ago The one-half acre currently being planned for the Warsaw Biblical Gardens may become the largest one in the United States, explains Warsaw Community Development Corp. Project Manager Judy Prichard. The garden will be located in Center Lake Park near the intersection of North Detroit and Canal Streets, and will be built around the Levin Memorial Fountain. This one-half acre plot was a metal scrap-yard a few years ago.
50 Years Ago Grace College's 1961 yearbook, "Grace," won first place for best group of panel pictures in the annual yearbook judging contest sponsored by the Indiana Collegiate Press Association. Judges said that the pictures displayed "clever combinations of informal and formal pictures and showed vitality in group pictures." Eleven yearbooks published by Indiana colleges have won awards in 10 categories.
75 Years Ago On New Year's Day at noon, a group of Winona Lake boys braved the ice-cold water of Winona Lake and organized their local Polar Bear Club with a plunge in the lake. After taking a short swim this shivering gang posed for The Times cameraman. They included: Bobby Howe, Wilbur Strauss, Bruce Howe, Jr., Grover Sims, Jr. and Rowan Howe.
