When Bill Bryer, superintendent of the Times-Union's mechanical department, staged a drastic desk cleaning he rebelled at keeping a library book that's been taking up space eight years. It's a collection of poems titled "Christmas Bells Are Ringing" that was due at Warsaw library Dec. 19, 1951. Proofreader Loren Melick figured the fine. At 2 cents per day for 2,566 days it amounts to $51.32.

Naturally, all state members deny responsibility for the book. We prefer to think a visitor left it here and hope librarian Jim Sloan is so happy to get it back he won't quibble about the fine.
