10 Years Ago Dr. Suellen Reed, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction, honors Brett Boggs, Akron Elementary School principal for 15 years, as the elementary principal of the year for District 2 of the Indiana Association of School Principals. He has been at Akron Elementary for 25 years, previously serving as classroom teacher, assistant principal and athletic director. In order to become more effective, he has pursued professional growth opportunities for himself and his staff. Boggs and his wife, Sarah, live in Akron with their three children, Eve, Evan and Elyse. 25 Years Ago Leesburg School raised $15,000 for PTO projects at their Cheese and Sausage Sale fund-raiser. Sara Rigdon, second-grade, was the grand prize drawing winner of a computer; John Tarlton. kindergarten, was the top seller, winning a bicycle. Brent Widman is principal. Lion’s Pride, a choir of fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students from Lincoln Elementary, sang Christmas carols at United Telephone. Lincoln is United’s “adopted” school. Lion’s Pride is under the direction of Bob Dillon. Mentone school’s old gym was leveled. The building along Yale Street was known for its sturdy hardwood floor which was nailed together when constructed around 1925. Wayne Tombaugh, Mentone resident and former custodian, says the wooden floor was better than most basketball courts built today. A church group now owns the property. 50 Years Ago Mrs. Eldred Paulus, Mrs. Glenn Clauss, Mrs. Frank Smith, Mrs. Max Smith, Mrs. Garwin Eaton, Mrs. Wayne Smalley and Mrs. Ernest Igo are all descendants of the founders of Mentone, Horace and Albert Tucker. Initiated into the National Junior Honor Society in a candlelighting ceremony held in the Warsaw Junior High School Armory were: Michael Martin, Michael Johnston, Ronald Longenbaugh, David Baxter, Max Mock, David Zimmerman, Marcia Miner, Dawn Inai, Mary Alice Frantz, Robin Rasor, Pamela Teeter, Deborah Wiltrout and Teresa Wright. They were presented membership cards, certificates, and gold pins representing the “flaming torch.” Mrs. George Heaton is sponsor. 75 Years Ago Palestine Methodist Church will have a homecoming. A basket dinner will be served at noon and miscellaneous program enjoyed in the afternoon. The Rev. O.C. Bogue, pastor of the church, will give a short address. Legionnaire Ray Miner is elated as 198 Warsaw post members have already paid up their 1939 yearly dues, 22 more than one year ago. John Deaton’s lightweight team is in line for mid-west championship pulling honors by virtue of out-pulling the championship team of John Day of Spring Point at Wabash yesterday. Deaton’s team has been a consistent winner throughout many contests this year.
