A Kosciusko County chess player put in a good showing against the country's top school-age players. Harrison Elementary's A.J. Jansen, Indiana's state kindergarten champion, brought home a trophy, too. A first-grader now, A.J. took second place in the kindergarten-through sixth-grade blitz tournament - a speed chess division - and his parents, Dean and Carol Lyn, couldn't be prouder. "There were more than 1,000 kids there," his mother said of the national scholastic tournament sponsored by the U.S. Chess Federation. "A.J. did a good job."

When the Tiger Tourney championship was on the line here Saturday night, Warsaw's girls basketball team got in line, to the line and scored down the line. The result was a fifth Tiger Tourney championship in nine years for Warsaw, and the victim was 15th-ranked Mishawaka, falling for the first time in nine tries in a 63-60 cliffhanger. Stacy Grow scored 16 points and added seven assists  for Warsaw in the game.

Mr. and Mrs. Gerald M. Miller, Warsaw, have returned from a two-week vacation in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. They spent Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. George Franklin. Miller is music instructor in the Larwill schools. His wife, the former Sue Van Curen, attends Manchester College.

The following Indiana University students have returned to Bloomington after spending the holidays in this city: Martha Gast, William Braddock, Fred Olds, John Widaman, Milo Clase, Louis Coyle, George Heaton.

Miss Martha Lou Templin, student at Ball State Teachers College, left Saturday for Muncie after spending the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Templin, Leesburg.
