10 Years Ago The Warsaw Lady Tigers, currently ranked No. 8 in 4A, manhandled the host Columbia City Eagles in a 68-33 win. In his 25th year of coaching, Will Wienhorst now has his 400th career victory (400-132, 75.2 percent). He has been at Warsaw for 18 years (296-91, 76.5 percent) and says, “I’ve had great girls all the way through.” Firefighter Gary McDaniel received the 2003 Fireman of the Year honor during the Christmas party of the Burket Fire Department. Capt. Frank Swick, 2002 winner, presented the award for dedication and commitment to the department. 25 Years Ago The Nursing Exemplar Program recognized nursing staff at Kosciusko Community Hospital: Mary Kuhn, Dee Price, Jean Newhouse, Jo Hurias, Pat Hollar, Teresa Baney, Esther Baugher. On Dec. 1 and 2, 104 employees donated a combined total of 81 units of blood to the Red Cross. Pins were awarded to Ronald L. Jones, three gallons; Patrick Thomas, Kimberly S. King, Kenneth E. Wilson, Joseph B. Mikel, one gallon. Warsaw Community High School student Doug Busch received a $500 scholarship as the winner of the American Legion Oratorical Contest. Joy Conlon, Tera Rodocker, Rachel Keele and Rachel Landrum participated. 50 Years Ago The Green Thumb Garden Club held its annual “Christmas Workshop” at the Girl Scout Cabin, Center Lake. Showing some creations are Mrs. Loyd Berkey, Mrs. Condia Walburn, Mentone; and Mrs. Frank Merkle, Claypool. Angela Frederickson, 2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Frederickson, 428 W. Center St., is the Times-Union December Calendar Girl. She was on hand for Santa’s arrival in Warsaw Friday night. Mrs. William Mollenhour and Mrs. Troas Douglas are Gray Ladies for the local Red Cross. They deliver cards, letters and flowers to patients at Murphy Medical Center. 75 Years Ago Frances Braman and Margaret Murphy, Argos, have enrolled as students at the Laura Lee School of Beauty Culture in the Times building. The Stevens Troubadours will sing at the Charles Halleck meeting at Akron. Old-time ballplayer Bert Gerard, of Warsaw Hardware, recalls how in 1906 a second-rate White Sox team upset the baseball world by whipping the Cubs four out of six in the World Series of that year. Cubs had won 116 out of 154 games in that season. Two high school boys, Robert Zimmer and Bobby Henderson, maintain the Cubs would win the National League Pennant and World Series this season.
