10 Years Ago He will walk instead of run Jan. 4, bearing the 2002 Olympic Torch in the nationwide relay. David Hook, Winona Lake, is an amputee and this special exception has been granted to him while he carries the 33-inch high moving symbol of the Olympics. Constructed of silver, copper and brass, the torch weighs 3 pounds. Hook was nominated by his youngest daughter, Amy Barchini, Syracuse. He had no idea he would participate in preliminary Olympic events until the official package arrived.
25 Years Ago When Dr. Charles and Jackie Hollar attended the movie "Hoosiers" at the Center Center Theater in Warsaw recently, it was the ninth time they've seen the film. There's a big reason, of course, they keep going back: their son, Steve Hollar, stars in the film as a member of the fictional Hickory High Huskers, who win the 1952 state basketball championship. After this week the Hollars may have to go elsewhere to see the film because it is in its final week here.
50 Years Ago Warsaw girls got to meet "Stan the Man." Anne Blackford, Mrs. Donald Coahran and Lillian Carlson, chatted with Stan Musial, veteran baseball star of the St. Louis Cardinals, at the regional Junior Achievement management conference in St. Louis. Anne and Lillian represented Warsaw High School's five Junior Achievement companies. Mrs. Coahran is secretary to the local JA board of directors. They returned from St. Louis on Saturday.
75 Years Ago "Bill" Rarick, native of north of Atwood, where he still owns a large farm on the banks of Hoffman Lake, celebrates his 81st birthday Jan. 4. Every one of his 81 years, excepting when he took part in the Cherokee land rush in Oklahoma 60 years ago, has been spent in Atwood or on his farm. Thirty-nine of his immediate family descendants gathered at the Frank Rarick home at a turkey dinner in his honor.
