Drama teams from Edgewood and Lakeview middle schools gave presentations to more than 300 people in Rodeheaver Auditorium at the 16th annual program to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee chairman Joseph Banks led the singing. Corey Southall sang one of Dr. King’s favorite songs, “I Surrender All.” The Rev. Warren Walmer, Poplar Grove United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Chad Burkhart, Victory Christian Church, gave the invocation and benediction.
Amanda Wong, University of Michigan student and Wawasee High School graduate, and Anayeli Juarez, Grace College student and Warsaw Community High School graduate, were presented with Academic Excellence scholarships and plaques by Warsaw Community Schools Asst. Superintendent Sandra Hass.

Elected as the 1989 officers of the Builder’s Association of Kosciusko County were: president, Dave Melching; vice president, Dana Cone; treasurer, Rick Snodgrass; secretary, Gina Staton; executive officer, Carol Hartman. Directors were: Terry Cripe, Randy Miller, Tom Porter, Bob Myers, Larry Coplen, Brad Jackson, Elaine Grill, John Kozon.
The January meeting of Warsaw Reading Club was in the home of Cloice Metzger. President Doris Camden served as co-hostess. The program was given by Esther Pfleiderer, who reviewed the book, “Nancy Astor, Lady Unashamed,” by John Grigg.

Hobart Creighton, past governor of the Indiana district, and Dr. Virgil McCleary, past lieutenant governor of Division Two, installed the 1964 officers of the Warsaw Kiwanis Club. Robert Ellison is president; Blaine Mikesell, president-elect; Gordon Brubaker, vice president; Ross Sittler, treasurer; Jerry Helvey, the Rev. John Becker and Glenn Wagner, directors; Robert Taylor, secretary. Retiring president Ned Titus was presented with a set of walnut bookends with the Kiwanis emblem made by Joe Ettinger.
Louis Breading announced that Sandy Riner, known as “Mr. Banjo,” will perform for the Kosciusko County Shrine Club at its banquet and installation of officers Jan. 8. Max Arnold will be installed as president, succeeding Joseph Cerny. Brooks Pinnick is vice president; William Sadler, secretary; and Gilbert Bertsch, treasurer.

The Board of County Commissioners convened for the first time in 1939 with Seward W. Poor, Etna Township, elected as chairman of the board, succeeding William Dorsey. Cyrus B. Deaton is the other member. Walter Brubaker is appointed county attorney; Stephen R. Laughlin, county highway supervisor; Donald  Weirick, Courthouse custodian; Dr. W. B. Siders, jail and infirmary physician.
