10 Years Ago Tim Hicks celebrated his 25th anniversary with R.R. Donnelley & Co. Jan. 4. He began his career as a material handler in the bindery, was promoted to a rolltender in the pressroom, and he completed the program to journeyman rolltender in June 1982. Steve Moriarty is the fitness co-ordinator; Hollie Felgar, nutritionist; Joseph and Tonya Beer, owners; Diane Niccum, manager. 25 Years Ago Wayne Hendrix was hired to replace Milton Holmgrain as president of Kosciusko Community Hospital. Holmgrain retired with the passing of the old year and Hendrix enters the new, beginning Jan. 2, 1989. He says he wants “to continue the direction and some of the outstanding things accomplished here.” He has had over 20 years of experience in hospital top management. Beginning February, area residents will see new city buses traveling through Warsaw and Winona Lake. The body of the buses are fiberglass and they will be blue and white with red striping. Each month KABS buses travel over 19,000 miles through the county. From 1981 through 1987, there were 100,000 passengers; in 1988 alone more than 113,000. Fifty schools will play in different sectionals this year. The 10 teams to play at Warsaw’s 3,400-seat gymnasium on East Smith St. are Claypool, Leesburg, Mentone, Milford, North Webster, Pierceton, Syracuse, Warsawand Columbia City and Larwill from Whitley County. The loss of 41 schools since the ‘63 tourney, through consolidation and closing, has brought the closing of the Peru sectional and a new one at Hammond. Serim Gursoy of Izmir, Turkey, spent Christmas week at the home of Dr. Virgil McCleary and family, North Bay Drive. She became part of the McCleary household during the 10 months she was an exchange student at Warsaw High School in 1956. She is now working on her second Master’s Degree at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, N.Y., and drove to Warsaw with a friend. “I liked living in Warsaw, but I loved the McCleary family!” 75 Years Ago Jean Burns, Mentone, was hostess at a New Year’s Eve party Saturday night at her home. Guests were Mary Ellen Myers of Warsaw, Bobby Mollenhour, Geraldine Nellans, Lena Rush, Sam Blue, Zanna Hammer, Dale Wallace, Jr., Heston Creviston and DeVon Hibschman. Following the delicious dinner, the group attended the cinema at the Centennial Theatre. Mayor-elect John G. Hansman succeeds Dr. C.C. DuBois Jan. 1, 1939. Appointments made by the new Mayor: City Attorney Allan S. Widaman succeeds Everett E. Rasor; Raymond Neff, 11-year veteran of the Warsaw Police Force, was elevated to Chief of Police, succeeding Frank Lucas who served seven years. Herbert Thompson was re-appointed fire chief.
