10 Years Ago Breading’s Cigar Store closes its doors for the last time Jan. 29, after 85 years. Mayor Ernie Wiggins said his uncle took him to Breading’s for lunch when he was in grade school and after school when in junior high. Dan Woods cooked, waited tables and washed dishes while in junior and freshman high. Alan Robinson said he’s been a “regular” since 1950. Tom Robinson was taken to lunch in 1968 for its famous potato soup, and has been a regular since. John Conley went to Breading’s “to find out what’s going on in the community.” When Stan Phillips, 61, was a Times-Union carrier, the kids waited at Breading’s for their papers. The building is returning to the family of its original owners. 25 Years Ago Royalite (Uniroyal) factory celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1989 with four of the nine original employees still working with the company. Norris Salisbury and Larry Fretz still work at the Warsaw plant; Bob Stevens now works in Frederick, Md.; Bob Clark is assigned in Mishawaka. The employees were honored recently at a company dinner where they received a specially designed and engraved walnut and brass desk clock. Warsaw Community Development Corporation, First National Bank, Ameri-Kan, Max Miller Recyclable Product Service and the city of Warsaw have signed a one-year recycling agreement, which states that a front loading dumpster will be placed in the First National Bank parking lot. 50 Years Ago Triton High School’s homecoming is Jan. 22, and candidates to succeed Pamela Warner, last year’s queen, are Roberta Rovenstine, Darlene Reichard, Gail White, Jane Thomas, Carol Reichard, Pat Gottschalk, Rachel Harman and Debbie Byers. Milo Clase, 325 N. Buffalo St., brought to the Times-Union a pussy willow stalk from a bush in his yard in full bud. Extremely mild weather last week has caused this phenomenon. City Plan Commission members listed 20 recommendations considered necessary improvements in Warsaw to meet the growing population and traffic volume in the next 10 years. 75 Years Ago First round play in the city fire station’s bid-euchre tournament started with “Trigger” Wolford and “Smoke” Hauth taking a fall out of “Policy” Holm and “Moose” Andrews, score 60 to 31. “Bush” Rice and “Alfalfa” Hay won the second game, defeating “Comrade” Mathews and “Puny” Thorn. First game tonight: “Hizzoner” Hansman and “Wire” Fisher meet “Hercules” Bennett and “Pipeman” Bibler; second game: “Park” Hendrick and “Sergeant” Neff engaging “Crip” Randalls and “Blue” Gill. Referee is “No Justice” Smith. Prize: $5 cash. The Elks’ Lodge is raising money so that youngsters will have milk this school year.
