Valley’s girls basketball team went into Saturday night’s game against Manchester looking to capture its first conference title under coach Gary Teel. The Manchester Squires were looking to play the role of spoiler. The Vikings overcame first half foul trouble with three starters to outlast Manchester 52-43. Valley hadn’t won a conference championship since ’95.

Three new firemen were added to the Warsaw Fire Department on Jan. 1. The addition of three more firefighters brings the number of paid firemen to 23 with 15 volunteers. They are Jeff Rostochak of Syracuse, Mark Jones of Pierceton and Kerry Stogsdill of Warsaw. The three firemen have been receiving on-the-job training since Jan. 1.

Jerry Warner, 20, son of Staff Sergeant and Mrs. Calvin Warner of Stead AFB, Nev., formerly of Warsaw, has been selected for listing in “Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges.” He attends Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. Jerry is treasurer of the Gonzaga Peace Corps, prefect of the Sodality, a member of the glee club and drama club. His younger brother, Dan, 19, who recently enlisted in the Army, is serving in Alaska.

A few hours after a mass meeting called by Mayor C.C. DuBois Sunday night, a large power boat, “Miss Richmond”, owned by Howard Dillman, was loaded on a truck and was departing for the Ohio River flood scene. Eugene Kinch, Fred Hillegas, Cloice Neer, Billy Botkin and Line Hay helped complete the loading. Dillman, Kinch, Hillegas, Hay, Ernest Nicholas and several other volunteers went along to man the boat now on duty at New Albany.
