10 Years Ago Roger Fisher, Sprint public affairs manager for Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Elkhart, Wabash, Cass, Miami and Marshall counties, retired after 32 years of service. He joined Sprint, formerly United Telephone of Indiana, in 1971 as a computer operator/programmer. He graduated in 1993 from Kosciusko Leadership Academy and was the first recipient of the Sam Walton Business Leader Award in 1996. His wife, Janet, is secretary at North Webster Elementary School. Joining Todd Realty are Chad Singrey, Tom McClintic and Janet Bailey. Robert Breading Sr. and his son, Lewis “Peanuts,” started Breading’s in the 1920’s in a two-story wood frame building at 114 E. Center St. The building was sold in 1954 to Ray Deafenbaugh and Sam Holbrook. Burleigh Burgh bought Dick Kehoe’s interest in 1959. Craig Smith bought into the business in 1974. 25 Years Ago For the first time ever, the same school is on top of the boys and girls AP poll. Warsaw is one of three schools in the state to have won a state championship in both boys and girls basketball. The two teams have a combination 30-0 record, the best in the state. Meister’s Drugs, located on West Market Street across from Mutual Federal Bank, recently held a grand opening ceremony. Tom Meister is pharmacist; Jeff Meister, DDS; Vicki Copeland, Beth Porter and Kevin Fitzpatrick, employees. 50 Years Ago Staff at Larwill High School are preparing to publish an “anniversary annual” to include graduates from 1896 through 1964. Richard Helfrich, editor, said the project was deemed appropriate since the school will close in a year or so. Orders must be received by the end of January. The 120-page blue and gold annual, the “Reflector, “ will include the faculty, alumni pictures, individual photos of each student, classes, clubs, sports and other activities. Correspondence may be addressed to Elaine Holycross, sponsor, at Box 37, Larwill. Checks should be made out to the Larwill High School and 15 cents included for handling. The annual will be available following an autograph record hop the second or third week of August. 75 Years Ago During the World War, in 1917, Warsaw Daily Times building custodian Hiram Ulrey, then in his 50-odd years, past military service age, did his bit by buying a $50 Liberty Bond through the old Indiana Loan & Trust Co. The bond was never delivered and he considered it a donation to the war effort. A few days ago, Willard Cain found the bond in Ulrey’s name among papers of the now defunct bank and sent it to the U.S. Treasury. Yesterday, Hiram received his bond and $15 interest. Extremely high wind, which prevailed through Sunday, ripped off a large portion of the roof of Dalton Foundry. A force of men were hurriedly summoned and sufficient repairs made to enable resumption of operations Monday morning. Trainmen on the Pennsylvania Railroad report 25 passenger trains daily.
