10 Years Ago The children of the Rev. and Mrs. Leroy E. Lindsey Sr. will host a reception for their parents at Grace Village, Winona Lake, Jan. 17, to recognize their 67th wedding anniversary and Mrs. Lindsey’s 90th birthday. They have made their home at Grace Village since July 2001. Ruth and L.V. Warner, former residents of Sidney, will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary Jan. 25. They were married Jan. 25, 1939. L.V. was a farmer and school bus driver; Ruth is a homemaker. Both worked at Cardinal Center, Warsaw. The Warners now make their home in Avon Park, Fla. 25 Years Ago Free Methodist World Headquarters, Winona Lake, honored its employees at the International Friendship House Dec. 9: Mary Jane Coates, 35 years of service; Robert Haslam and Jeanne Tucker, 20 years; Joyce Brenneman, Mary Parr, Violet Unruh, Judith Brown, Dean Wallace, Idlee Armey, Arlene Cole and Edgar Cole, all 15 years; Vicki Bunch, 10 years in administration; Tina Anderson, Brenda Lowman and Martha Scantlen, all completing five years. Barbara Ridley chaired the Christmas banquet steering committee. 50 Years Ago Wallace Manrow, county probation officer, and Curtis H. Barker, court bailiff, have been re-appointed to their positions for 1964 by Judge Lee. Mrs. William Camden and Mrs. George Nye have been re-appointed to serve as court reporters. The Claypool High School Knights defeated Syracuse 98 to 64 for its 11th consecutive triumph. An unidentified Claypool cager drives for the basket while two Syracuse players, Roger Niles (43) and Kenny Butt (44), try to keep him from scoring. Coye Conley, Number 53 of Claypool, aided his teammate. Warsaw will host a sectional high school basketball tournament again this year, but the field of 10 teams (one less) will be the smallest in history here. Etna Green has consolidated with Bourbon and Tippecanoe to form Triton which has been assigned to play in the Plymouth Sectional. 75 Years Ago George W. Himes, 92, last Civil War Veteran in Plain Township and long-time resident of Clunette and Leesburg since 1865, died December 5 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. O.E. Glant, Leesburg. He was born in Bryan, Ohio, Jan. 21, 1846. Abraham W. Walters, 92, Civil War veteran from Rochester, died Dec. 6. He enlisted in the Army when he was 16. Hilda Helser and Mary Ellen Burwell, Warsaw, and Betty Walter, Akron, all graduates of the Laura Lee School of Beauty Culture, will go to Indianapolis to take state examinations. County Assessor Harvey D. McCleary has received 3,800 dog tags for 1939. The tags are made of a light metal the shape of a dog house with number and year on it.
