10 Years Ago Junior Neighbors 4-H Club members stuffed the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s van with 36 boxes, duffel bags and suitcases of donated items designated for the Walter Reed Army Medical Center Fisher Houses in Washington, D.C. The entire student body of Madison Elementary School walked down to the WRSW studios on West Market Street to donate canned goods and supplies. The new home for Warsaw Community Church is Ranch Road, across from Eisenhower Elementary School, south of Warsaw. The new facility is 65,000 square feet and has five acres of parking. The auditorium has a capacity for 1,300 and was designed to be used for other functions. 25 Years Ago Dalton Foundries’ charitable boxing event was held recently at the National Guard Armory with proceeds going to Combined Community Services, Salvation Army and the Warsaw Community School Foundation. Lester Conley beat Mike Reichert, John Pratt beat Fred Helton, Ron Patrick beat Stan Estes, Rodger Darnell beat Doug Craddock, Melvin Shaw beat William Kintzel, Terry Doberstein beat Tony Middleton, Randy Scharf and Gary Johnson fought to a draw. The annual Elks Hoop Shoot contest will be conducted at Baker Boys’ Club Dec. 9 for girls and Dec. 16 for boys. Trophies will be awarded to the winner and runner-up in each age group. Denny Hover, Alan and Frank Grose are co-chairmen of the Elks Youth Activities Committee. 50 Years Ago Jackie Caywood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Caywood Jr., North Webster, was selected as the 1964-65 North Webster High School Homecoming Queen. Last year’s queen was Aloha Moser. Contenders for the crown were Donelle Stand, Cheryl Reasoner and Cathy Hamman. Principal is Wendell Bryant. Dr. and Mrs. Norman H. Uphouse, Route 3, Warsaw, celebrated their silver anniversary Nov. 4. They were married in 1939 in Philadelphia, Pa., by the Rev. A.V. Kimmel. They have three daughters: Deborah, Hanna and Abigail. Dr. Uphouse is chairman of the education department and his wife, the former Miriam Elizabeth McKeefery, is dean of women at Grace College. 75 Years Ago Dora Marie Ruse, Principal Loren Chastain’s office girl, gave The Times editors a tour of the newly remodeled Warsaw High School building and addition. Upon entering from its new entrance on West Main Street, there was soft carpet and clean, tan walls. All 687 persons could be seated in the immaculately clean, air conditioned auditorium, not in hard wooden chairs, but in patriotic orange and black cushioned, streamlined seats. In back, there was a projection room for moving pictures. The stage lacked nothing, from the beautiful velvet orange and black drop curtain to settings and floodlights.
