10 Years Ago John Boren, chaplain and director of the Kosciusko County Jail Ministry Inc., was recognized by the Greater Warsaw Ministerial Association for his service to those who are incarcerated in Kosciusko County. Boren has worked in the jail since 1994, when he began visiting with the Gideons. In 1995, he started the ministry and was certified a chaplain in the jail. Boren was honored for his work with people not only in the jail, but also with those who have been released. 25 Years Ago Adoption of an old and tested addressing system recently proposed by a Warsaw resident has gained the support of almost all county leaders and will probably be officially approved next month. The baseline system uses a starting point in the center of the county, and would use the current road numbering system – a fact that should save the county a hefty sum of money – proponents say. 50 Years Ago A 50-year-old Etna Green woman, known throughout this area for raising crickets, is equally adept as a homemaker. Mrs. Ted (Frances) Melton is the first subscriber to have a homemaking idea scheduled for use in “Polly’s Pointers,” Polly Cramer’s nationally distributed column, which appears daily in The Times-Union. A “Polly Silver Dollar” award is being sent to Mrs. Melton for her homemaking idea, which will be used in a future column. 75 Years Ago The American public will jingle a new nickel in its jeans before the close of this year. It will be the first time since 1913, when the Buffalo nickel was introduced, that there has been a change in the design of the nickel. Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau Jr. announced that a likeness of Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States, will replace the bison of the western plains that has been used for 25 years.
