10 Years Ago The Konevets Quartet from Russia will perform Jan. 29 in Rodeheaver Auditorium, the third of Lakeland Community Concert Association’s 2004-05 concert season. The quartet, founded in 1992 by graduates and students of the St. Petersburg Music Conservatory, takes its name from Konevets Island and Monastery on Lake Ladoga, where more than six centuries ago Arseny Konevsky founded a cloister. Music ranges from ancient chants and hymns to modern. Lakeland Art Gallery, 116 S. Buffalo St., is ready to begin its schedule of events for 2005 by hosting Kelly Shoemaker, oil painter, and Terri Penrod, photographer. Sue Karczewski and Bonnie Gore will teach classes in February. 25 Years Ago Kevin Zachary, special projects manager at R.R. Donnelley & Sons Inc., and Marilyn Temple, assistant manager at Warsaw’s Detroit Street Pizza Hut, were honored as Warsaw’s 1989 man and woman of the year. Zachary moved to Warsaw in 1959, and within a few years, was heavily involved in the community. He and his wife, Brenda, have four children: Jenni, Jill, Julie and Jesse. 50 Years Ago Mentone High School cheerleaders Judy Decker, Sherry Bryan, Connie Smythe and Dena Nellans received the county tourney cheerleaders award from Fred “Pepper” McKown III. Claypool had won the trophy for four consecutive years. City employee Bill Tharp constructed at Center and Lincoln streets a new school crossing sign with a flashing red light from materials furnished by the police department. Complaints had been received by Chief of Police Donald Snyder that the crossing guard was difficult to see in bad weather. Bill Goshert, head football coach at Warsaw since 1956, succeeding Frank Sanders Jr., has been named head football coach at North Side High School in Fort Wayne, effective at the end of the school year. Don Geozeff, assistant, will join him. 75 Years Ago Plans were completed for a piano recital by Richard Carpenter to be held in the new high school auditorium Jan. 11. Lawrence Pursely, former baritone soloist of the Capitol University choir, Columbus, Ohio, will be on the program. Carl Hartman purchased his old cafeteria located on the south side of the court house from James Case. He started the cafe in 1922. Former Daily Times carrier, Billy Hankins, told his mother, Marie Hankins, “I’m gonna join the Marines.” Chauncey Tucker’s recorder’s office is getting a new electric typewriter. Stenographer Ruth Shepler was ousted temporarily from her office at the Legion building due to redecoration. She has a big open box of peanuts on her desk.
