After one hour and more than three dozen spelling words, the final two Kosciusko County elementary spelling champions went head to head on “grandeur.” Joel Meister, of Triton Elementary, misspelled the word. Stephanie Henning, of HELPS Homeschool, spelled it correctly, and went on to spell “requisition” accurately, winning her the county elementary championship. Meister is the runner-up.

The Akron junior high girls basketball teams celebrated the opening of their new gymnasium recently with a pair of victories over Pierceton. In the first game played at the new gym, the Akron seventh grade recovered from a 6-0 halftime deficit to win 14-8 behind Sheri Dunn’s six points. Erin House and Tonya Werstler each scored four for the Cubs.
Akron easily won the eighth-grade game by a 51-17 count, as Lael Leininger and Amy Peterson each scored 12 for the Fliers.

Mrs. Homer Ring, Warsaw, has been notified that her daughter, Miss Rebecca Hart, will appear in a film feature at the Embassy Theater in Fort Wayne Jan. 27-28. Becky models a bathing suit in the film which was made just before she graduated from a Fort Wayne modeling school. She is now completing a course at a South Bend beauty school. Quite photogenic, Becky’s picture also appeared recently in a South Bend paper.

“Mush” Warner, Times’ boxer-photographer, made a tremendous hit with several members of the Pierceton fair-sex, his old home town, during the Warsaw-Mentone fracas. Kidded by the Pierceton cheerleaders, the genial scribe wagered an Eskimo pie that Warsaw would defeat Mentone by 20 points. He paid off some 25 odd pies after the game was over. The score was Warsaw, 40; Mentone, 30.
