    MUNCIE - Gillain Morrison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Morrison, Springhill Road, and a student from Warsaw at the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics and Humanities, has been named a 1998 National Merit Commended Student.

The National Merit Scholarship is a distinction that places students in a group representing fewer than 1 percent of U.S. high school graduating seniors.

    Some guys will do anything for a little publicity, but for Russ Clifford, manager of Ski Hut USA, this morning simply provided a chance to combine his favorite sport of water skiing with a little Christmas cheer. Clifford had decided to don wetsuit and Santa suit come the first good snow and that day arrived. He joined Ski Hut owner Bill Gordon (who drove the boat) for a few quick trips on Winona Lake. It was 28 degrees at the time, but as Clifford quipped, "It was just a little nippy."

    Larry Poland, a 1956 high school graduate of our town, is a member of the men's glee club at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill., where he is a sophomore majoring in sociology. Larry is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Poland, of Winona Lake. He sings second bass.

    For the first time in about 25 years, ever since Kosciusko County went dry under local option, liquor was sold legally by some drug stores in Warsaw for drinking purposes after the 18th prohibition amendment was repealed recently.
