Jo Ann Byers, Public Relations Associate for the Warsaw Community Public Library, wrote her last column for The Times-Union Dec. 27 ("Check it Out"). She used it to say farewell to the staff and community. She wants to spend more time with her grandchildren. "My time at WCPL is coming to an end. The memories that have been made during my 22-plus years will stay with me for my lifetime."
Members of the Lincoln Elementary first, second and third grades presented "Once Upon a Manger," under the direction of music director Bob Dillon, with accompaniment by Julie McKeighen. Principal is Dave Whaley.
Enough work on the first phase of the City-County Athletic Complex west of Warsaw has been completed to ensure that six soccer and Pee Wee football leagues will be able to play their contests next spring. Phase two (dugouts, concession stand, fencing and lights) will begin in the spring. Seeding of the ball diamonds will be done also.
The annual Christmas Eve party at Breading's Cigar shop in Warsaw will begin in the wee hours Monday. Last year, the good ol' boys raised more than $3,000.
50 Years
Sharon Collier, junior at Pierceton High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Collier, was crowned "Basketball Queen" at half-time of the Pierceton-Mentone basketball game Friday night, Dec. 10. Princesses: Sandy Mitchell, Donna Linn, Ruth Smith and Susan Schuldt. Crown bearer was little Diane Bryant and Cheryl Rager is the retiring queen.
William Arthur Leininger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Leininger, Rt. 2, Akron, and Wanda D. Hiers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hiers, Rt. 2, Akron, were crowned king and queen at Akron High School's Homecoming basketball game Saturday night, Dec. 11. They were selected through penny votes by their fellow student and friends, the money was collected for Riley Hospital.
75 Years
A radiogram from Santa Claus was sent to Clarence Hartman, president of the Warsaw Junior Chamber of Commerce, on the eve of Old Saint Nick's mad dash from his North Pole home to Warsaw to greet youngsters in a pre-Christmas visit. Santa said he would arrive at the Pennsylvania railway station at 7:18 o'clock from the west on Wednesday night, December 4, 1940. He had planned to arrive at 7 o'clock, but was expected to be delayed in Plymouth for 15 to 18 minutes.
