To say the least, the 2001 high school football season was good to Warsaw’s Phil Jensen. Following a campaign in which his Tigers went undefeated in the regular season for the first time in more than 30 years, finished 10-1 overall with a Class 5A No. 3 ranking, and won the Northern Lakes Conference championship for the third straight year, Jensen has been named Times-Union Area Coach of the Year. The blonde-haired emotional coach, who is now third on the all-time win list at Warsaw, also led the North All-Star team to victory in the North/South All-Star game, stopping a four-year skid.

The pace of the game may have set high school basketball back 20 years, but 38-for-54 free throw shooting by Warsaw against South Bend Washington here Friday night moved the Tigers forward into the semi-finals of the 21st South Bend Holiday Basketball Tournament. Every one of the 38 successful charity tosses came in handy for Warsaw in its 64-61 win over the stubborn Panthers at the Notre Dame Athletic and Convocation Center. The win, the seventh in nine outings for the Tigers, puts Warsaw into the semi-final against South Bend Adams.
