Dec. 26 10 Years Ago Who would think that history could be so fun, entertaining, funny and informative? All in attendance at the annual meeting of the Kosciusko County Historical Society found out how entertaining our county history can be. A series of humorous and poignant sketches highlighting events in Kosciusko County’s history were written for the occasion by Sally Hogan and performed by Bill Landrigan and Greg Smith. The musical accompaniment was provided by Dorothy Sweeney. 25 Years Ago If ever there was a more unique style of celebrating Christmas Eve at six in the morning, it would have to be at Breading’s Cigar Store, in downtown Warsaw. The legendary cigar shop that caters to early risers and serves up more gossip and clamor than local papers, continued its annual Christmas eve tradition with plenty of bright-eyed and generous cheer. Coffee and rolls were free, compliments of co-owners Burleigh Burgh and Craig Smith. Their only request was a donation to the Pee Wee Football League. By the day’s end, more than $1,000 in donations was collected. Finally, organizers locate F.D. “Mouse” Leake, a regular for almost 50 years who has been chosen as this year’s “Breading’s Man of The Year.” Upon his acceptance of the award, the crowd begins to cheer “Speak, Speak.” “This is really something,” he said. 50 Years Ago William Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Smith, formerly of Warsaw, has been appointed advertising director from the campus radio station, WMBI, at Manchester College. He is one of 50 staff members of the student operated station. Smith is a junior this year at Manchester College, majoring in speech. 75 Years Ago Warsaw and vicinity experienced Christmas, Thursday, Dec. 25, the warmest Christmas in many years. Thermometers late in the afternoon registered 55 degrees above zero. Traces of the snow of last week disappeared with the exception of a few patches in shadows of buildings in very cold spots.
