10 Years:
The late Robert Herendeen, Mentone, was inducted posthumously into the Air Show Hall of Fame in Orlando, Fla. Dec. 3. He passed away Jan. 22, 1994 at the age of 66. His brother, Don, and widow, Jacqueline, also a pilot, plan to bring one of the plaques from Florida to the Bell Aviation Museum in Mentone, where there are already 35 trophies won by the pilot, along with pictures, patches and military honors from World War II. As a boy, he was fascinated with flight, and learned to fly at age 16, taking lessons at the Rochester Airport, when it was little more than a gravel strip. During his solo flight, he performed acrobatic maneuvers in a Piper J5, beginning a storied career in aviation. His father, the late "Chick" Herendeen, owned and organized an air field south of Mentone, now the Mentone Airport.

25 Years:

Whitko High School student, Richard Jason Thomas, received the only gold medal in the United States in the 21st Exhibition of World School Children's Art in the Republic of China Art Competition, winning for his pen and ink drawing, "The Unfinished Shed." The United States also received four silver medals and a bronze. Other Whitko students competing: Kenneth Penn, Tonya Werstler, Jeremy Widman, Tisha Pletcher, Dale Warrix, Susan Mears, Gearl Stephens, Chris Foreman and Trevor Christman. It is the third consecutive year and fourth out of the last five that Whitko has received the highest award in the United States.

    David S. Darr, son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Darr, Winona Lake, is one of eight Grace College students included in the 1991 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges."

50 Years:

Floyd H. Baker, assistant principal of North Webster High School, was honored by the Basketball Adult Booster Club, of Wolf Lake. A plaque was presented to him from Coach Donnie Butts after a basketball game recently for his outstanding service as a teacher and coach in Ohio and Indiana. He has taught social studies in the North Webster School system for the past 17 years, coaching basketball for 12 years. His impressive career hit a peak while at Martin's Ferry High School in Ohio, teaching and coaching from 1939 through 1945. From 1945 to 1949, he was head coach at Richmond.

    Robert Haney, president of the Jefferson Elementary School P.T.O., presented $6 to Katrina Rife for selling the most fish fry tickets. Other winners: Cindy Dunham, Penni Harris, David Sprong, Duane Breske and Kay Arnett. Don Cox is principal.


75 Years:

A home guard unit will be organized in Warsaw to replace the National Guard when it is called for indefinite regular duty in January, according to Adjutant-General Elmer F. Straub. Home guards are to be organized by December 15, with five regiments and 12 battalions in the state. Straub hopes to recruit 2,811 active and 715 inactive men to form the civil defense force, to be recruited at National Guard armories throughout the state.

    Coast-to-coast recognition for Warsaw and Purdue University came Friday, Nov. 29, with the announcement that Dave Rankin, captain of the Boilermaker football team during the season just past, has been named on Life magazine's All-American eleven. The magazine showed out-of-action photos of him and the team.
