2005 Master Gardener interns: Rodney Dean, Leesburg; Deb Gillum and Cheryl Timke, Syracuse; Michaell Jamison, Claypool; Dee Kinney, Milford; Karen Long, North Manchester; Mary Moore, Winona Lake; Rosemary Roberts and Teresa Smith, Warsaw; Trudy Rowe, Cromwell. The 2006 class is Aug. 22 to Dec. 12.

The weekend after Thanksgiving, Bart Holle, Warsaw, began constructing a 36-square-foot winter village inside what he calls "The Barn" in his backyard. The village, full of houses and people, is a tradition that started with his mother 20 years ago. "When she passed away, I started building it myself. The display grows each year. It's something I really enjoy doing."

25 Years:

Tippecanoe Valley's Chris DuBois signed to attend Morehead State (Morehead, Ky.) Nov. 19. He averages 18.7 points a game for the Vikings, helping to lead to an 18-4 record.

Shirley Smalley, of Century 21 Larry Holmes and Associates, sold more than $1 million in real estate from April to November. She has been with Holmes four years.

Instead of buying gifts for each other, the sixth-grade students at Jefferson Elementary School decided to buy four used bicycles and fix them up. The bikes were donated to Combined Community Services for a toy give-away Dec. 18.

Members of the Exploring Agriculture Class of Edgewood Middle School, under the direction of Steve Savage, and the Town and Country Garden Club, completed a landscaping project at the main entrance of the school.

50 Years:

Clint Pletcher, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Pletcher, Pierceton, received his Eagle Scout award from his former Scoutmaster Burt Niles, Warsaw, in a special Court of Honor of Troop 61 at the Pierceton High School cafeteria. He has earned 22 badges in his scouting career. Scoutmaster Bill Schuldt was master of ceremonies. Clint was pinned by his father, and then presented his mother with a similar pin.

The Zion Chapel United Brethren in Christ Church will dedicate its new Sunday School facilities Sunday, Dec. 12. The one-room church was built in 1898 on a corner lot in Turkey Creek Township, four miles south of Syracuse on the Syracuse-Webster Rd. at County Rd. 1000 North. Rev. and Mrs. Carl Gable have ministered for eight years.

75 years:
The Werntz Foundry, located on South Cleveland Street in East Warsaw, has been leased to a trio of men from Chicago who plan to reopen the plant in two weeks. The foundry is one of the oldest industrial institutions in Warsaw, established 50 years ago by O.W. Werntz, who came here with his wife from Auburn. Five years ago Mr. Werntz, now 79, was forced to withdraw because of poor health. New equipment is being installed and several changes made. Polishing of the light and medium gray iron castings by shot blasting in place of the old "tumbling machines" is a new feature. Patterns used at the foundry include lamp bases, sewer grates, boiler grates and stove parts.
