10 Years Ago Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins presented a plaque to Trish Brown whose term as at-large city council representative expires Dec. 31. “It was my honor to serve with all of you,” he said. Council members are: Jerry Patterson, Joe Thallemer, Charlie Smith, Jeff Grose, George Clemens and Bill Rhoades. Don Byrd donated trophies to Wawasee High School to continue the Bob Ellis Memorial Award. He died Feb. 29, 1968, in Chu Chi, South Vietnam. Ellis was a Syracuse High School graduate who was twice named most valuable golfer. 25 Years Ago Washington School third-grade classes of Brenda Oakes and Sara Hawblitzel have been corresponding with Miller’s Merry Manor residents since the beginning of the school year. Fay Robinson and her pen pal, Heather Flowers, made a Christmas ornament. The Warsaw High School marching band was among the 20 selected to perform in Chicago’s 1988 McDonald’s Charity Christmas Parade. Alex Landis receives the Winona Lake Fireman of the Year award from Fire Chief Dick Haines. He has been with the department since 1959 and is a retired mailman. Terry Himes received the service award from the firefighters. He is being recognized for his work in educating children in the county. 50 Years Ago A group of the leading citizens of Warsaw met 50 years ago, Nov. 17, 1913, and organized the Warsaw Building Loan and Savings Association at 109 W. Market St. These men were: Dr. C.W. Burket, president; Logan H. Williams, vice-president; C. Edwin Stout, secretary; William S. Rogers, treasurer; James R. Frazer, attorney; Charles H. Ker; Theodore Frazer; J. B. Watson; W. W. Reed; Carl E. Kratzsch; R. DePuy; Edwin B. Myers. Two original stockholders are Martha E. Stoner and Carl Kratzsch. On Nov. 13, 1961, 1st Lieutenant John O. Berg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Berg, entered the wheel well of a B-52 in which he was flying and inserted the down-lock pin in the landing gear under sub-zero temperatures, turbulent air and precarious footing. 75 Years Ago Thames Mauzy, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mauzy, and former operator of the Mauzy Sporting Good Store here, is employed at a Sears Roebuck store in Gary. He is back in Warsaw visiting old friends. Everett Hanft of the Fitch jewelry store was up all night awaiting the birth of his 8-1/2 pound son, Don Everett, at the McDonald Hospital. John R. White, dentist, is exuberant over his three-week-old grandson, Billy Bob Border. Harry Hall, Jet White grocery manager, went to Fort Wayne Sunday to hear Issac Nelson and his band. Chick Byers, Leah Parks and Wilburta Lowman went along.
