Maurice Beer, Milford, is ending his long career of service. Graduating from Milford High School in 1940, he began his life in public service at the age of 32 on the Van Buren Township advisory board. After 10 years out of politics, he became a county commissioner and then a Kosciusko County councilman. Beer was a Milford Citizen of the Year in in 1985 and drove a bus for Wawasee Schools from 1979 to 1995.
Wawasee High School senior Kory Lantz, son of Mark and Cindi Lantz, will continue his education and basketball career at Bethel College. He is in his fourth year as starting point guard for the Warriors and third year as quarterback on the football team.

Warsaw Community High School boys’ swim team moved over the .500 mark by sinking Manchester 107-63 at Warsaw Tuesday. Tony Doyle was a double winner for the Tigers: 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.05 and 100 backstroke in 1:06.50. Also, Chris Brandt, 100 butterfly; Ryan Longford, 100 free, and Jason Prichard, 100 breaststroke. Warsaw’s Rich Lundin took second in the 200 Individual Medley, nabbed by Manchester’s Craig Briner in 2:09.81. Briner also took the 500 free while teammate Matt Sites took the 50 free.
Tony Marshall, 23, accepted his 1st-degree black belt from instructor Kenneth Gillenwater at the Gillenwater’s Lions Academy School of Martial Arts in North Webster.
Jon Konkle, fifth-grader at Claypool Elementary School and Notre Dame fan, was presented a Fightin’ Irish basketball by 3rd District Congressional candidate Tim Roemer.

 C.H. Burris, general superintendent for United Telephone Co. of Indiana and Ohio Telephone Service Co., retired from his position on Nov. 1, as announced by T.A. Danielson, president of the two companies. He is retiring with a record of nearly 35 years continuous service in the telephone industry, beginning his career as a lineman in his hometown of Advance in 1930 when the United organization in Indiana had only eight telephone exchanges.
“That’s what me and my brudder want,” says Dennis Alderfer as he sat on Santa’s knee. Dennis, 3, and David, 6, are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Alderfer, Route 1, Mentone.

  Local Western Union office manager, Herbert Espich was elected to succeed Lawrence Siders as 1939-40 president of the Warsaw Kiwanis Club; George Bowser, vice president; Elmer Funk, treasurer; L.E. Carter, Dr. Max Garber and Dr. Winton Thomas, board of directors.
Theft of 3,300 gallons of gasoline from the Phillips Petroleum Corp. bulk plant east of the stock yards, near the Pennsylvania railroad, was reported to Police Chief Raymond Neff. H.A. Whiteman, New Paris. The locks on the pumps had been forced and broken by using a hack saw.
Frank Brenneman, Route 1, Leesburg, renewed his subscription to the Daily Times. “I’ve been reading the Times and Indianian for 68 years, since 1873.”
